Planet Shakespeare
In Planet Shakespeare, students learn a complete 1 hour long version of a Shakespeare play, which they will perform at the end of the 12 week session. During that time, students will also investigate subjects relevant to the play and the Elizabethan world, then make connections to their own world. Critical thinking is encouraged during discussion, A variety of challenging subjects may be discussed and no one point of view is set forth.
Besides learning about the Elizabethan world and Shakespeare's life, students may engage in :
writing
public speaking
artwork
They may also be involved in production elements of the play: costuming, music, set dressing, programs, etc.
Various exercises will also be used to encourage:
team building
creativity
focus
thinking outside the box
empathy
and more!
The program takes place in the fall and in the spring. The class meets for one 3.5 hour session per week, with the performance taking place during the final class session.
Note- though a play is the subject of the program, this is not technically a theatre program. It is a theatre program that goes deeper than the stage. Rather because plays, especially Shakespeare plays, are an examination of humans, this is a program in the study of being human in all our complexities, with history, science, math, English and any number of subjects mixed in. We study how the characters mirror our own lives, or don't. We study knowing ourselves as well as our fellow humans.
In other animals, "play" is practice in being an adult - exactly what we're doing here!
Planet Shakespeare JR.
A program for younger students (8-10) structured like afterschool programs, meeting for 6-7 weeks for 1.5 hour segments with a 20 minute performance at the end.
