Why Shakespeare?
(or Is Shakespeare still relevant?)
A number of studies, most notably Champions of change: The Impact of the Arts on Learning, commissioned by the Arts Education Partnership and the President's Committee on the Arts and Education, have found that the arts, and Shakespeare specifically do much more for students than teaching them an appreciation for the greatest writer in the English language.
Among other things the arts:
-promote language development (and language development = brain development)
-develops memory training
-foster focus, creativity, compassion and collaborative skills
-allows exploration of human values and choice vs consequence
-fosters the capacity to deal with difficulty and setbacks
-encourages students to try new things
-gives a sense of individual as well and group accomplishment
-impacts learning in other academic fields
-
We at Bard Unbound have a number of ways to expose students to the Bard: from a one time workshop to a 12 week residency.
